The picturesque white village of Alcaucín (at 500m altitude) is located in the Axarquía region at the foot of the Sierra Tejeda, bordering the province of Granada. It has managed to preserve its old Moorish style with its charming narrow streets, white houses and its eternal fountain. Alcaucín has a few small village shops for daily groceries, banks/ATMs and various bars and restaurants.
The municipality of Alcaucín is rich in medicinal waters (the source of Las Majadas) and minerals (sources of Espino...). Hiking enthusiasts can follow the Ruta del Santo, which ends at the top of La Maroma (2069m), in the Sierra de Tejeda. Less intense but equally beautiful are the Ruta de Jabelí or the Ruta Botanica.
El Refugio is located 2 km outside the village at 630m altitude and is easily accessible. In Google Maps, search for 'El Refugio Alcaucin' and follow the indicated route.
From the village, you can also follow the signs for 'Área Recreativa, Cortijo del Alcázar'. After a climb, you will come out above the village (on your right). Here, make a sharp turn left and always keep to the right at all forks to continue uphill. After about 1.5 km, at a sandy path to the left, you will see a wooden sign for 'El Refugio'. Turn onto this sandy path.
The last 500 meters can be a bit bumpy with a short steep section in the middle, but it is passable with a normal car. When you see a beautiful display of oleanders (in bloom in summer), you have arrived at our Boutique B&B El Refugio.
Drive all the way to the end and then turn sharply left onto the driveway that slopes downwards.
The beach of Torre del Mar is just 25 minutes' drive away, Malaga (airport) is about 60 minutes. Granada can be reached in 1 hour and 15 minutes.
