The picturesque white village of Alcaucín (at an altitude of 500 meters) is located in the Axarquía region at the foot of the Sierra Tejeda, bordering the province of Granada. It has preserved its old Moorish style with its charming narrow streets, white houses, and perennial fountain. Alcaucín has a few small village shops for daily groceries, a bank/ATM, and several bars and restaurants. The municipality of Alcaucín is rich in medicinal waters (the Las Majadas spring) and minerals (the Espino springs, etc.). Hiking enthusiasts can follow the Ruta del Santo, which ends at the summit of La Maroma (2,069m) in the Sierra de Tejeda. Less demanding but just as beautiful is the Ruta de Jabelí, or the Ruta Botanica. El Refugio is located 2 km outside the village at an altitude of 630 meters and is easily accessible. Search for "El Refugio Alcaucin" on Google Maps and follow the indicated route. From the village, you can also follow the signs for " Área Recreativa, Cortijo del Alcázar ." After a climb, you'll arrive at the top of the village (on your right). Here, make a sharp left turn and keep right at all junctions on the road uphill. After about 1.5 km, at a dirt road to the left, you'll see a wooden sign for "El Refugio." Turn onto this dirt road. This last 500 meters can be a bit bumpy and includes a short, steep section halfway along, but it's manageable with a regular car. Once you see a magnificent display of oleanders (in bloom in summer), you've arrived at our Boutique B&B, El Refugio. Drive all the way to the end and then turn sharp left onto the ramp that goes downhill. Torre del Mar beach is only a 25-minute drive away, Malaga Airport is about 60 minutes away, and Granada can be reached in 1 hour and 15 minutes.
