Nature lovers and sports enthusiasts will find everything they need in the surroundings of El Refugio. There are many beautiful walks to be made in the Nature Park Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama , which can be reached directly from our B&B. There is a suitable route for every type of hiker. From a circular walk to Alcaucín of over an hour to a strenuous day trip to La Maroma, the highest point (at 2,069m) of the nature park.

Zafarraya Gorge (20 min drive from El Refugio, 1.5 hr walk)
From the gardens of our B&B, we have a direct view of 'Boquete de Zafarraya', also known as the Zafarraya pass (992m). In 1979, the remains of Neanderthals were found in a cave here, including a jaw, which is the best-preserved jaw from that period. This cave is not accessible to the public. In about 45 minutes, you can climb from the parking lot to the top, where you have a spectacular view of both the Axarquia valley to the sea and the plateau on the other side of the pass.
El Saltillo (20 minutes drive from El Refugio, 3 hours walk)
This walk (8 km) with its spectacular 54-meter-long suspension bridge at a height of 70 meters, is also known as the little brother of the 'Caminito del Rey'. It is not a circular walk, which means you will also walk back the same way.
The Caminito del Rey (90 min drive, 3 hour walk)
El Caminito del Rey is a walking path through the El Chorro gorge. The path is at most one meter wide and is located 100 meters above the river 'El Chorro' against the rock walls. It can and may only be completed from the northern side (the entrance) to the southern side (the exit). For this walk, you need to book tickets well in advance. For cycling enthusiasts, various challenging routes are waiting, and we would happily help you choose a route that suits your level and wishes.
Electric mountain bike
There is also the possibility to rent an electric mountain bike directly from our Boutique B&B El Refugio via our partner Andaluz E-Bikes.
Whether you enjoy exploring gravel roads, climbing mountains, or descending hills, an e-mountain bike makes riding on terrain that would otherwise be too steep or challenging suddenly feasible and even enjoyable. You can savor the scenery and natural beauty around you without excessive physical exertion.

But if you want it less strenuous, a delightful (flat) bike ride along the coast is also possible. In the coastal town of Torre del Mar, bicycles (including electric ones) can be rented at various locations
