Day trips - Nature and Sports
Nature lovers and sports enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy in the area surrounding El Refugio. There are many beautiful hikes to be enjoyed in the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park, which is directly accessible from our B&B. There's a perfect route for every type of hiker, from a loop walk to Alcaucín, lasting just over an hour, to a challenging day hike to La Maroma, the park's highest point (at 2,069m).

Boquete de Zafarraya (20 min drive from El Refugio, 1.5 hour walk)
From the gardens of our B&B, we have a direct view of 'Boquete de Zafarraya,' or the Zafarraya Pass (992m). Neanderthal remains, including a jawbone, were discovered in a cave here in 1979, making it the best-preserved jawbone from that period. This cave is not open to the public. In about 45 minutes, you can climb from the parking lot to the summit, where you'll enjoy spectacular views of the Axarquia valley down to the sea, as well as the plateau on the other side of the pass.
El Saltillo (20 min drive from El Refugio, 3 hours walk)
This 8 km walk, with its spectacular 54-meter-long suspension bridge at a height of 70 meters, is also known as the little brother of the Caminito del Rey. It's not a circular walk, meaning you'll return the same way.
The Caminito del Rey (90 min drive, 3 hours walk)
The Caminito del Rey is a hiking trail through the El Chorro gorge. The path is a maximum of one meter wide and runs 100 meters above the El Chorro River against the cliffs. It can only be accessed from the northern side (the entrance) to the southern side (the exit). Tickets for this hike must be reserved well in advance. You can do this through the official website. Misuse
For cycling enthusiasts, there are several challenging routes waiting, and we are happy to help you find a route that suits your level and wishes.
Electric mountain bike
It is also possible to rent an electric mountain bike directly from our Boutique B&B El Refugio through our partner Andaluz E-Bikes.
Whether you enjoy exploring gravel roads, climbing mountains, or descending hills, an e-mountain bike makes riding terrain that would otherwise be too steep or challenging suddenly feasible and even enjoyable. You can enjoy the scenery and natural beauty around you without excessive physical exertion.

But if you're looking for something a little less strenuous, a lovely (flat) bike ride along the coast is also an option. Bicycles (including electric ones) are available for rent in various places in the coastal town of Torre del Mar.
