Charming B&B with perhaps the most beautiful view over the Axarquía

On the border of the Sierra de Tejeda Almijara y Alhama nature park, at the foot of la Maroma you will find El Refugio, a small-scale Bed and Breakfast. Three kilometers past the village of Alcaucín the road ends and you imagine yourself at the end of the inhabited world. Here you can enjoy phenomenal panoramic views of the Axarquía valley with the nearby reservoir La Viñuela and the mountain range Boquete de Zafarraya.

In the middle of nature you can completely relax at the pool or at one of the other lovely spots in the garden. But if you want more action, that is close by. Walking, cycling, a trip along authentic white villages, a visit to the royal cities in Andalusia, a day at the beach, etc. It is all possible from our B&B!

El Refugio offers four charming rooms with private entrance, two of which are comfort rooms and two spacious suites. All rooms have an en-suite bathroom that is equipped with all conveniences. El Refugio is not designed for young children, but everyone from 15 years old is welcome.

Let's get acquainted

Loving music, mountains and high peaks, nature, hiking, culture, sun, traveling to faraway places and adventure, we have found our place here at the foot of the Maroma. For a number of years we had been toying with the idea of starting a B&B abroad, where it is also pleasant to stay in the winter. The choice fell on Andalusia in the south of Spain and during the holidays that followed we discovered the many beautiful things that this area has to offer. After the corona period, the time was ripe for us not only to continue to fantasize but also to translate this into action. A year and twenty visits later, El Refugio came our way and we were enchanted by the magnificent view and location in the middle of nature and at the same time close to Spanish everyday life.

On the last day of 2022 the time had finally come and our new adventure began here in Alcaucín.

Ria (Adriana) was born and raised in Berghem (North Brabant) and was raised with music. She turned her hobby - playing the clarinet - into her profession. In addition to playing music herself, she gave clarinet lessons and for the past 7 years she has also been a passionate music teacher in primary education. Here in Spain, music is a hobby again and she will happily tell you passionately about the many beautiful things that can be found here.

Jan Theun comes from Burgum in Friesland, studied business economics in Groningen and then worked in many places as an independent (project) controller. After an adventurous internship in Paris (1992), a world trip in 2002-2003, he thought it was time for a new international adventure together with his 'habibi' Adriana.

Together we enjoy creating a beautiful and pleasant place where everyone can feel at home and relax.
