Two kilometers beyond the village of Alcaucín to the northeast of Málaga, the road ends and you feel like you're at the end of the inhabited world. At this unique location, at the foot of the Maroma – the highest mountain in the province of Málaga – Boutique B&B El Refugio offers an ideal combination of peace, nature, and luxury, perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.
The Refuge offers 4 charming rooms with private entrance, including two comfort rooms and two spacious suites. All rooms, with en-suite bathroom, are modern and decorated with attention to detail, and feature all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay.
At El Refugio, you celebrate your holiday at your own pace. Start your day with a fresh breakfast (including homemade products) on the patio with your gaze on the endless view, enjoy tapas or a light lunch by the pool and discover local flavors. We regularly pamper our guests with a delicious 3-course dinner where you can join in. And the honesty bar is always available for that refreshing drink. There are also numerous restaurants in the village, a 5-minute drive away, and in the surrounding area, ranging from typical Spanish cuisine to Indian cuisine, offering plenty of variety. We'd be happy to give you some great tips.
Numerous hikes, including 'El Saltillo' with its spectacular suspension bridge (also known as the little brother of the 'Caminito del Rey'), are located in the nearby area. Or cycle with the electric mountain bike from El Refugio directly into the Sierra de Tejeda nature park and enjoy the beautiful panoramic views.
But do you just want to do nothing for a while? The beautiful and spacious garden with swimming pool is the perfect place to relax. Everything here revolves around unwinding and enjoying nature. Look around you and dream away at the stunning view of the mountains, Lake Viñuela and the olive trees. Or flop down in the hammock and finally start that one book.
In the vicinity are authentic white villages such as Canillas de Aceituno, Comares, Nerja, Frigiliana and Mijas. For a cultural excursion, several royal cities such as Málaga and Granada (or even Córdoba) are within easy reach for a day trip full of history and charm.

Let's get acquainted
After a life in the Netherlands filled with music and a love of mountains, nature, hiking, culture, sun, adventure, and travel to faraway places, we found our pearl here at the foot of the Maroma.
For several years, we'd been toying with the idea of opening a B&B abroad, somewhere pleasant to stay even in winter. After exploring Andalusia, we discovered the region's wealth of beauty during several subsequent holidays. Choosing the perfect location for our dream B&B wasn't difficult. After the coronavirus pandemic, the time was ripe to not only continue fantasizing but also put it into action. A year and twenty or so viewings later, we stumbled upon El Refugio, and we were captivated by its magnificent views and location, surrounded by nature yet close to everyday Spanish life.
On the last day of 2022 the time had finally come and so on January 1, 2023 our new adventure began here in El Refugio, our pearl on the mountain.
Who are we....
Ria (Adriana) was born and raised in Berghem, Brabant, and grew up surrounded by music. She turned her hobby—playing the clarinet—into her profession. Besides playing music herself, she passed on her passion for music to her clarinet students, and for the past seven years, she has also taught music in primary schools. Here in Spain, music remains a beloved companion, albeit a hobby. With a love of greenery, she tends the garden, while overseeing every detail in the guest rooms, ensuring guests have everything they need.
Jan Theun, originally from Burgum in Friesland, studied business economics in Groningen and then worked as an independent (project) controller in various positions. After an adventurous internship in Paris (1992) and a world trip in 2002-2003, he felt it was time for a new international adventure with his "habibi" Adriana.
Together we enjoy creating a place where people can truly unwind - a relaxed atmosphere, personal attention, comfort, and a welcoming feeling are central to us.
